In our review, we’ll cover some of the great features the Traxxas Rustler 4×4 VXL offers the pros, the cons, and everything there is to love about this powerful 4×4 RC stadium truck.
Let’s dive into our 4×4 Traxxas Rustler Review! Our team has 20 years of reviewing remote control cars and trucks, so we know a thing or two about high quality products.
Introduction and Features
The Traxxas Rustler VXL is a high-performance RC stadium truck that has taken the RC world by storm. With its incredible speed, durable build, and advanced features, it offers a thrilling experience for both beginners and seasoned enthusiasts.
In this comprehensive review, we’ll explore the ins and outs of the Traxxas Rustler VXL, covering its performance, build quality, maneuverability, and how it stacks up against the competition.
Speed
One thing the Rustler 4×4 VXL really has going for it is speed capabilities. Like other Rustler models, the Rustler 4×4 VXL can reach some incredible speeds and lives up to its role as a stadium truck. While as a 4×4, the 4×4 VXL can’t reach quite the same speeds as other Rustler models, like the 2WD Rustler VXL, it combines all-wheel drive capabilities with comparable speeds.
You might not be looking into the 4×4 with drag racing in mind, anyway, but depending on what gearing you opt for, the Rustler 4×4 VXL can exceed 65 MPH, making it an incredibly speedy stadium truck with all-wheel capabilities at the same time. The 4×4 Rustler is extremely maneuverable, making it a truly versatile RC.
Build and Quality
Oh man, Traxxas RC cars are seriously some of the best out there. They’ve been in the game for over 30 years and have built up a seriously loyal fanbase. I mean, just look at the numbers – they’ve sold over 6 million cars and trucks to date!
And with a 4.8 out of 5 star rating on the Traxxas Amazon store, it’s clear that customers are absolutely loving their Traxxas vehicles. I’ve personally owned a few Traxxas cars over the years, and I’ve gotta say, the quality is seriously top-notch.
They’re built to last, and the attention to detail is really impressive. Plus, with a huge range of customizable parts and accessories, you can really make your Traxxas vehicle your own. If you’re looking for a high-quality RC car that’s sure to provide hours of fun, you can’t go wrong with a Traxxas.
Maneuverability and Stability
Stadium trucks like the Rustler 4×4 VXL can reach some pretty great speeds–and you might be using them on uneven, slippery, or otherwise less-than-ideal surfaces in terms of stability. Fortunately, the Rustler 4×4 VXL features pretty advanced technology to mediate stability challenges.
Like other Traxxis RC cars, the Rustler 4×4 VXL features Traxxas Stability Management®–or TSM. TSM helps users avoid powerslides and acceleration on slippery or low traction surfaces without throttling acceleration. For a stadium truck, the optional stability management help might be particularly useful, and with as much speed as the Rustler 4×4 VXL is capable of, having optional stability control is a huge plus.
Variable Stability Management
TSM is adjustable. On your transmitter, you’re able to determine how much stability management you want, leaving it up to you whether and how much you want to use it. You can choose between off and 100% assistance. For hands-on control, you can set it to 100%, and
Low Center of Gravity Chassis
The Rustler 4×4 also features a lengthened chassis and, with a low center of gravity, is optimal for maximized stability. Just like with stability management, for a stadium truck that can move as fast as the Rustler 4×4 VXL does, having a stable, lengthened chassis with a low center of gravity makes this a highly capable machine.
Self Righting
For a stadium truck with as many capabilities in terms of speed and stability, as the Rustler 4×4 VXL has, it might be hard to imagine. Still, long-time RC users will know even the most capable RC vehicles can sometimes experience flipping or being turned over and unable to move.
Rather than hunting down your RC, self-righting can enable you to get back to what you love with minimal interruption. The Rustler 4×4 VXL features a self-righting feature that you can use from your transmitter. With the push of a button, the Rustler 4×4 VXL can often right itself in mere seconds.
Durability
One of the reasons you might be looking into an RC stadium truck rather than a buggy or car is that you’re looking for a strong and durable body. Fortunately, the Rustler 4×4 VXL delivers on that front. With a tough exterior body, a new low center of gravity chassis, and a rugged suspension, the Rustler 4×4 VXL is more than capable of handling its own power.
Tough Body
The Traxxas Rustler RC features a strong body capable of handling serious use. It also features a clipless body mounting latch system, so removal and installation are simple and secure. With rooftop rollover protection, and a reinforced cage within the body, the Rustler 4×4 VXL has a hardy exterior perfectly suited for stunts and varied uses.
Integrated Wheelie Bar
The Rustler 4×4 VXL can reach speeds in excess of 60 MPH, and with optional stability management, a tough body, and all-wheel capabilities, the first thing you might want to do is try out a few wheelies. Luckily, the Rustler 4×4 VXL features a built-in reinforced and integrated wheelie bar.
A Range of Options
Depending on what you’re looking for in an RC, the Rustler 4×4 VXL has a lot of options. One of the great things about this stadium truck is that you can customize it extensively for your own uses.
Depending on how much speed you’re looking to get out of it, your experience level, and your budget, you have a range of battery and gearing configurations to choose from. And there are always tons of Traxxas accessories and upgrades you can buy.
With a 7-cell NiMH battery and 11/54 pinion and spur gearing, the Rustler 4×4 VXL is a great beginner option, reaching speeds around 30 MPH, while for advanced users who are looking to get speed and performance, a 3S LiPo battery and 20/54 gearing will unlock speeds potentially in excess of 65 MPH.
With optional Traxxas Stability Management®, you can also choose how much control you want over stability and how much assistance you want from your machine.
Pros and Cons – Rustler 4×4
The Rustler 4×4 VXl has some great features, as well as some drawbacks. We’ll cover some of the pros and cons of getting a better idea of what the drawbacks and benefits are.
Pros
- Very Fast for a 4×4 Stadium Truck: While some of the 2-wheel drive counterparts might have the ultimate edge on speed, for a rugged 4×4 with a durable body and chassis, the Rustler 4×4 VXL can reach some truly impressive speeds.
- Stability Management Optional: With Traxxas Stability Management®, users can enjoy as much or as little assistance as they want in stability management.
- Durable, clipless body: The Rustler 4×4 VXL features a highly durable body that’s well-suited for the truck’s robust performance.
Cons
- Potential price barrier: While the Rustler 4×4 VXL isn’t the most expensive RC on the market, in order to get the most performance out of it, users might be looking at some costly components.
- Not as fast as 2WD counterparts: While some of the 2WD Rustler models reach more speed, chances are if you’re interested in the 4×4, you’re looking for an RC that combines the traction of 4WD and the speed of high-performance stadium trucks, and the 4×4 Rustler delivers.
- Cornering and drifting: Unlike other cars made for drifting and corning quickly, the Rustler is mostly for offroad and straight line speed. Cornering fast or attempting to drift is not a strength.

I love my VXL but it feels dated now that there's other Traxxas models like the Sledge and XO-1. Still a great all around RC though!
The Rustler is a prime example of why Traxxas is the #1 RC brand in the world. For under $500 it's hard to compete with the speed, durability, and customizations available. Out of the box, it's ready to run in minutes after a full charge.
