Did you know that impulse purchases are one of the things that lead to buyer’s remorse? If you’re looking for a new hobby, RC planes could be your answer; however, you need to do your research to find out what the best RC plane is.
There are so many models out there, and each manufacturer will tell you theirs is the best. From very small to some of the largest in the world, How does one know which is actually worth buying?
There are many factors to consider and a plethora of planes you can try. However, you don’t want to start investing a lot of money into a new hobby; if you’re not positive, you will stick with it. You either want to get a cheap RC plane or one made for beginners.
Keep reading to learn about RC planes for beginners and how to choose the best RC plane as you begin to explore this hobby.
RC Planes With SAFE Technology
One factor you need to consider is that with recent technology, many of the best remote control plane options for beginners get built with tech that helps you as you learn to fly.
Many of the planes we mention have SAFE technology. SAFE stands for Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope.
It is a flight mode that helps you fly the plane safer. It makes flying a lot easier, allowing you to focus on stunts and tricks.
However, there are many more things you’ll want to consider as well.
5 Things to Consider When Buying an RC Plane
RC plane prices, of course, are a significant factor in choosing your first RC plane. However, there are other aspects to consider as well.
1. Cost
Price can be a determining factor for many people when buying something for the first time. RC planes are no different: there are really expensive ones and really cheap ones, depending on what kind of features you want and need.
RC Plane Category | Average Price Range |
---|---|
Cheap | $30 – $100 |
Moderate | $100 – $300 |
Expensive | $300 and above |
If you are new to the hobby, you may want to go with a cheaper model to learn the ropes. There are a lot of models out there (like the Hobbyzone Champ S+), and you may not need all the bells and whistles pricier models have.
2. Size
Size is something else to look at when buying an RC plane. Most RC planes are small and fit in the palm of your hand. Some can be absolutely massive in size, like this Boeing 747.
Others are much bigger, like the Horizon Hobby 3D Ultra Micro Super Cub S. It is a foot long and features a 7.4 volt 900mAh Li-Po battery. It should get noted, however, that larger models take longer to learn to fly than smaller ones.
3. Material
Plastic and foam RC planes are more likely to crash as compared to those that get crafted from aluminum. This is because the latter is heavier and less likely to get damaged. There are some common materials in RC planes like:
Balsa Wood
This lightweight and versatile wood is a popular choice for RC plane construction due to its strength and flexibility.
Foam
Many RC planes are made from foam materials, such as expanded polystyrene (EPS) or expanded polypropylene (EPP), due to their lightweight and inexpensive nature.
Carbon Fiber
This lightweight and strong material is often used in high-performance RC planes, as it can provide excellent strength and stiffness without adding much weight.
Fiberglass
Another common material for RC plane construction, fiberglass is durable, lightweight, and easy to work with.
Plastic
Certain parts of RC planes, such as canopies or propellers, may be made from plastic materials due to their durability and affordability.
Metal
Some high-performance RC planes may feature metal components, such as aluminum or titanium, to increase strength and durability.
Plastic and foam planes are lighter, however, and easier to fly. Some models that get made from either material are reinforced with carbon fiber, making them sturdier and crash-proof.
4. Features
There are a lot of features to look at when buying RC planes. These include things like shape, design, and color. You may also want to consider things like camouflage, too, if you are looking for a model that is effective for FPV flying.
5. Flying Characteristics
These include flight time, durability, speed, and so on. Remember that in order to become a skilled pilot, you must keep practicing. Only then will you be able to fly a plane like a pro.
Other Considerations
The type and size of your plane should match your skill level. If you are new to flying RC planes, you may want to get a smaller and less expensive one to start. Larger models are more difficult to fly because they are slower and can take longer to learn how to maneuver.
Read the instruction manual, not just the quick-start guide, to help you correctly assemble and put together your plane and its components.
5 Parts of Plane Design
RC planes come in a variety of designs. Some are stunt planes that are meant to do aerial acrobatics.
Others are made for speed, while some are made for both. Some are made for beginners, while others are made for expert pilots.
1. Motor
An RC plane’s motor determines its speed. So if you want to fly fast, you should get a model with a powerful engine.
It is also essential to consider the location of the motor. While most are placed in the nose section, there are some that are placed in the fuselage, the tail, or even the wings. The best place to put an engine is the fuselage, but this can be pretty bulky.
2. Wings
Most RC planes have wings, though some are made without them. These are known as flying wings.
These planes are used for both gliding and indoor FPV flying.
RC gliders are the best RC planes for beginners to start with. They are easier to learn how to maneuver, and they are slower.
This makes them more stable and easier to control. They are also much cheaper. But, because of their simplicity, they are not as durable.
3. Fuselage
Planes come in different fuselages, as well. Some are made for gliding, others for speed, and others for both.
The fuselage also does affect the maneuverability of the aircraft. But, this is something a pilot should learn to handle as they get better at flying.
4. Electronics
These electronics components include the radio receiver, servos, and gyroscope. The radio receiver is the part of the plane that receives signals from the transmitter. You can either choose a receiver that is soldered directly to the speed control or remote control transmitter, or you can go with a receiver that is sold separately.
Either way, they are the same. The primary purpose is to help stabilize the aircraft. The receiver is also what makes communication possible between the transmitter and the plane.
Servos look like antennas, but they are actually motorized actuators used to control an aircraft’s propeller and rudder.
Gyroscopes are used to stabilize an RC plane. They are found in most models, but smaller ones may not have them. They are usually located on top of the plane’s fuselage.
5. Remote Controls
Perhaps the most crucial part of an RC plane is the remote control. It includes two pieces: the transmitter and receiver. The flight controller is what helps you control the plane.
It can either be on the transmitter or receiver, depending on the model. A controller with more channels is better because it gives you more maneuvering options. Smaller planes can have up to 4 channels, while bigger ones can have up to 7 channels.
3 Types of Plane Assembly
After you have chosen the type of RC plane, you should also choose its assembly. There are three types of RC plane kits.
1. ARF
ARF is Almost Ready to Fly. It is an already assembled plane with a tail, wing, winglet, and some other things already installed. It will be about 90 percent ready to go, but you will still need to buy things like a motor, battery pack, and radio gear.
2. RTF
An RTF RC plane is Ready to Fly. It is assembled, and all you have to do is charge the batteries, put it on a plane, mount the propeller, and you are good to go. Both these models are more expensive since you are getting a ready-to-use kit.
3. Kit
A kit is not completely assembled. You will have to assemble the parts and install the wings and the fuselage yourself. When you buy a kit, you get a manual that helps you assemble the plane.
With one, you can fully customize the plane’s design. The downside is that it is not a ready-to-fly plane; you will have to assemble and charge it first. The pros of having a kit over a ready-to-fly plane lie in the price and the ability to customize.

Frankly all of these planes feel pretty cheap to me. Is there a list for beginners that are better quality? I realize most people can't afford more than $100 RC planes
Hands down my favorite is the F-22 raptor. The rest of them look like toys or bi-planes, but the jet fighters like the F-15 and F-22 are awesome looking.
